So I taught the kids how to draw Lovey today during my school visit the other day. A few of them needed help afterwards, but this one little girl came up to the easel, grabbed the markers and did THIS!!! 5 years old!!! No help whatsoever. So adorable. Rockin’ purple shoes too!
This past weekend was the second year of the Montclair Literary Festival. I had a workshop at the Montclair Art Museum based on my third book "Mr. Biddles" and the collage-style illustration used for it. I had all the kids create their own inventions, like Mr. B and it was so cute to see the what they came up with! So clever and cute.
I am always creating images for my Instagram account (when too busy i post older work) but this morning began with the usual warmup for the day--playing around with illustrated bits I've created in the past and moving elements around/altering color to evoke mood. I would love for my next book to be in this vein. Here are two recent pieces...
It was another great event down in Princeton! The organizers are so wonderful and welcoming to all the authors. It is so much fun to meet everyone and talk shop in between signing books. I suppose the surprise of the day was selling out of Lovey Bunny. She is in her second year and going strong! A few people came by to tell me how much their daughters loved that book and how they met me the year before. So sweet. The Grumpy Pets also did well but for some reason, Lovey still outsold it. I even made special Grumpy bubbles for the kids!!! They threw a lovely party for all of us afterwards and we sold something like 73k in books in just 4 hours! Crazy! :)
Sharing some of my process in developing little Billy for The Grumpy Pets. He was a little too grumpy at first, so I had to create a version that wasn't too scary. Lots and lots of sketching! And color tests.
