Stole a few hours yesterday afternoon to plop myself down at Van Vleck gardens and paint. The place is absolutely gorgeous and abundant with beautiful flowers and grasses. Here’s a peek at what I worked on.
So much work goes into making a picture book! This is the first time I am illustrating someone's else's manuscript so I've really enjoyed immersing myself in the art. I've been trekking to the park each day to capture trees and plants for reference. (j'adore my iPhone!) I've also been doing lots of plain air watercolors at my favorite public gardens. All the little details to be planned out--sketches, watercolor bits, color tests, backgrounds, etc. I keep creating while I wait for my editor to review the last dummy. Wondering what will make the book...
It's that time of year where I create simply for the joy of creating. No edits. No market strategies. No voice in my ear about what sells or is trending in publishing...just painting by the pool. Sometimes I need that. Especially after some of the letdowns as of late. Art restores... :)
My favorite part of summer is my tradition of experimenting with watercolors by the pool. Yesterday was a gorgeous, low humidity day so it was very enjoyable to work outside. Current obsession is cacti! :)
When the gouache marks are more fun than what you are actually painting...had to add a smiley face! TGIF. :)
