I committed to this practice of working in my sketchbook each morning and have really enjoyed it! I did it for a few reasons, but mostly to break out of drawing the same types of things over and over—and to experiment with different techniques. Lately I am working primarily in gouache and colored pencils, but other days I just sketch in graphite or play in watercolor. I force myself to try new subject matter so that I can become more skilled in creating more complex scenes; drawing from different points of view and angles. I highly recommend this practice to any illustrator. It is such a peaceful way to start the day. :)
keeping it loose!
I’ve been working on the new book a lot lately– and each time I do a small test off to the side of my paper–I like the results much more than the actual “finished” piece I am trying to achieve. I love the loose feeling of watercolors and letting them work their own magic. I hear other artists mention how they like their sketches more than the finishes so I suppose this is similar. Hard to keep the lightness…

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2020 is a great creative year for all of you. I love to mix it up each year and challenge myself as an artist. I decided to do more quick studies in watercolor so I sharpen my skills. No computer. Just a brush and paint. It’s a lot of fun so far! Busy working on the book so this is a great early am. start to my day. Should be fun to look back on at the end of the year. :)
